Cabo San Lucas, Mexico
Where to stay?
We usually do Airbnb when we go to Cabo, but a couple of resorts that we really enjoyed were:
Zoetry Casa del Mar Los Cabos - what did I love? Great couple getaway. Romantic. The junior suite with a balcony is worth the upgrade! Excellent food and they totally catered to my vegan requests. The chef prepared delicious off-menu options for me. Spa treatments were fabulous and the pool has a swim-up bar. Enough places for shade and great lounge chairs to work on your tan. This is located between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo which makes it great to visit both cities.
Sandos Finistara Resort - what did I love? There are multiple pools, a great spa, and a variety of restaurants on the property (11 in total). If you don’t want to leave, you don’t have to (but you should!!). I will note that this is a timeshare property, so be prepared to either listen to their pitch or say no. All in all the service is great. The rooms have kitchenettes and most have a balcony. It is in a great location in Cabo, you can walk to some shops and the marina.
One of the benefits of staying at a resort is the spa. I admit I am a spa junkie! I love a good spa day. Both of these resorts have spas that are great! Sandos is a bit more upscale spa, but both offer fabulous treatments.
What to do?
There is the beach, walking around town, tequila tasting (if you are brave), and a variety of water sports. If you are looking for a little different adventure, here are two of my favorites.
Todos Santos
About 1 hour north of Cabo San Lucas is this cute little beach town. It is definitely worth the visit. There are lots of little shops, restaurants, and bars to visit. I worked with Chef Noel at El Refugio and learned some great tips and tricks and made some delicious traditional food! All plant-based, of course. I would highly recommend this experience.
Hierbabuena Restuarant is a beautiful place to stop halfway between Cabo and Todos Santos. It is a little off the beaten path but Google will get you there. You can get a cocktail, coffee or tea. They grow much of their own food and when we were there, they offered plant-based options. It is super cute and worth the stop
Glass Blowing
I was always mesmerized by the glass blowing at Disneyland. When I went to Italy I saw glass blowing at a whole different level. But I never did it myself until I visited the Glass Blowing shop in Cabo. You can just watch, or you can actually blow your own glass. I know have a colorful glass that I helped make myself! What a great memory. If you are not interested in blowing your own glass, they have plenty of beautiful pieces you can buy. Well worth it to stop by
What to eat?
There are many options for fresh fruit and vegetables.
You will see a lot of fresh fruit stands with watermelon, papaya, and pineapple. You’ll see them sprinkled with red powder, this is a sweet-ish chili powder usually homemade but similar to Tajin. Also readily available are cucumber and jicama, also sprinkled with chili powder.
In nicer restaurants always ask what might be available. I have gotten some really delicious dishes prepared for me by the chef just by simply asking. This usually is only successful in nicer restaurants where they are more accustomed to special diets.
Look for vegetable fajitas, corn tortillas, nopales (prickly pear cactus), mushrooms, potatoes, and guacamole. Search for elotes (grilled corn on the cob on a stick) see if you can get without the mayo and butter. Drizzle with lime and chili. OMG, my mouth is watering just writing this! I have had some really creative dishes like mushrooms made to look and taste like scallops, mushroom tacos, and a strawberry tapioca dessert that made me want to literally lick the dish!
When you’re ordering in a restaurant there are a few hidden ingredients you may want to ask about. These are ingredients that may be used in preparation but are not listed in a menu description. Watch out for:
Lard: sometimes used in refried beans, flour tortillas, and tamales. Make sure to ask.
Chicken broth: sometimes added to dishes Mayo: sometimes added to guacamole
Sour cream: sometimes it is in or on top of dishes, even if the menu doesn’t say
Cheese: added to most dishes
Cabo San Lucas is a really fun adventure! Make sure you take time to get to know some locals and practice your Spanish! Bring sunscreen and your sense of humor. Remember, sometimes things operate on a different time schedule than you might be used to. Most of all have fun!
